University of Leeds
The University of Leeds has been a pioneer of intellectual property commercialisation in the UK and was the first UK University to set up a dedicated technology transfer function. In 2002 it became the first university in the UK to outsource its technology commercialisation activities to Techtran, which was acquired by IP Group in January 2005.
Leeds is one of the UK's top research universities with more than 61% of its research rated as 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent,' securing the University 14th place in the UK for research quality, and 8th place for research power in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).
More than half of the University’s schools are ranked in the top ten in the country. The University has jumped 12 places up the rankings since RAE 2001 – one of the biggest improvements in the country.
Leeds has 47 active spin-out companies in areas as diverse as oil exploration, cancer drug development, geological research, embryology and foetal development. The majority of these companies are based in Yorkshire and their total value is estimated at £160m. To read more about spin-out companies from the University of Leeds, click here.
