University of YorkIP Group first entered into a partnership with the University of York in 2003, focussed on the research activities of a flagship plant and microbial genomics centre at the University – the Centre for Novel Agricultural Products (CNAP). IP Group entered into a wider partnership to cover the entire university in March 2006.

The University of York has a reputation for being at the forefront of scientific research, as confirmed by the results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise in which it was ranked 8th amongst all UK Universities after submitting 92% of its staff to this 7-yearly review of research excellence.

Virtually all of its research is "internationally recognised" and over 50% is "world-leading" or "internationally excellent" (RAE 2008). York is consistently a top 10 UK research university and attracted over £200m of funding last year. Twelve departments were ranked in the top ten in the country with almost all departments in the top 20.

CNAP is a research centre in the Department of Biology at the University of York, founded in 1999 with the help of a benefaction from the Garfield Weston Foundation. CNAP’s mission is to realise the potential of plant- and microbial-based renewable resources through gene discovery and germplasm development. The award of a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education in 2006 recognised CNAP as a centre of excellence for strategic research on plants and microbes.

Strategic research is primarily targeted at plants for biorenewable feedstocks, plants for health and plants for phytoremediation. The CNAP Artemisia Research Project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation addresses the improvement of the supply chain for artemisinin, a key anti-malarial for the developing world.
