IP Group runs an annual work experience programme to give students a taste of working life and to illustrate how each member of staff contributes to the success of the Group. We currently partner with Career Ready and the programme targets students interested in STEM or business subjects who would not ordinarily get an opportunity to experience life and work in an innovative city-based company. These students are often the first in their families to go to university.
Following a short recruitment process, the successful candidates have the opportunity to see how IP Group supports its portfolio companies, following the story from identifying suitable IP, to setting up a new business and how different teams provide support as these businesses mature. Through this process, the students learn about different career options and understand the story of how we all made our way to the IP Group family. During the programme, we aim to include a visit to a portfolio company to help the students understand what IP Group is all about.
We have had very positive feedback from both the students who have spent time with us as well as from the IP Group team who are involved with the programme. It is an opportunity for the volunteers to take time out of their day-to-day roles and to support and mentor the students. The enthusiasm from both sides can definitely be felt in the office.
David Nash, Assistant Vice Principle at The Petchey Academy, said: “We have seen a marked increase in the confidence of the students that have had the opportunity to go through the IP Group work experience programme. The week gave them the opportunity to learn about an innovative company like IP Group and, perhaps more importantly, opened their eyes to the huge range of potential careers available. The whole process including the work experience, and the resultant change in aspirations, will support our students to strive for their very best academically and provide them with a scaffold on which to select the career of their choice.”
